Pending, stored and permanent codes
A code’s status tells you how the vehicle recorded the fault. Write down the status your scanner shows alongside the code.
Pending
A monitor detected a fault that has yet to meet its confirmation criteria. Check whether it returns under similar conditions and whether the scan shows a confirmed code as well.
Stored or confirmed
The fault met the criteria for storing a confirmed code. A reader may also display manufacturer-specific current or history labels. Check the module and tool terminology when deciding whether the problem is present now.
Permanent
On a vehicle that supports it, a permanent emissions code stays in memory until the OBD system verifies that the relevant fault is gone. A clear command or battery disconnect cannot erase a permanent code.
