Getting started
How to read OBD-II codes
The job is to capture the code, its status and the conditions when it set. Do that before choosing any erase or reset option.
Connect the reader
Park safely. Use the owner’s manual to locate the diagnostic connector, often below the driver’s dash. Follow the tool and vehicle instructions for the ignition position when plugging in and reading.
Read the whole report
Start with the OBD-II or emissions scan. Copy each complete code, its status, and the module or scan menu that reported it. Save any freeze-frame data. Use an enhanced scan if the basic reader misses a module you need.
Look up what you found
Start with the exact code. For an enhanced or manufacturer-specific code, include the year, make, model, engine and reporting module. Record any noticeable symptoms and when the warning appeared.
